Dental Implants have gained popularity over the past few years. A person suffering from tooth/teeth loss is considering directly going for dental Implants rather than going for any other treatment. Although dental Implants are 99% successful in some cases dental implants can also fail.
Why do Dental Implants fail?
Dental Implants can fail due to various reasons and at 3 stages:
1. Immediately after the surgery:
Some Dental Implants fail immediately after the surgery because of these reasons:
a) Infection after the surgery:
If pain and swelling persist even after the healing period then that leads to infection after the surgery which will put the implant placement at risk.
b) Bone availability very low:
Dental Implants can also fail if the bone available for placing a dental implant is very low. Dental implants fail because the bone with which the implant binds is insufficient and the implant is left exposed.
c) Body itself rejected the Implant:
This is a very rare cause of dental implant failure because the body itself rejected it due to allergies and genetics.
2. Dental Implant failure within 1 year of the surgery:
Dental Implant can also fail within 1 year of the surgery because of the following reasons:
a) Early Loading of the Dental Implant:
If dental crowns are placed over the implants before 3 months then there are chances of dental implant failure as the surrounding bone is not hard enough to take a load of chewing food.
b) Breakage of crown and bridge Prosthesis:
If the dental implants are placed on one side only and the opposite side the patient has lost his teeth and all the masticatory forces are applied to the dental implant then that may lead to dental implant failure.
c) Undue excess pressure over the dental Implants:
If the crown that is placed on the dental implant is not placed properly or comes with placement problems from the labotary then the failure of the dental implant might occur.
3. Dental Implant failure after 1 year of surgery:
Dental Implants can also fail after 1 year of surgery due to these reasons:
a) Not maintaining proper oral hygiene:
If after the placement of a dental implant the patient didn’t maintain his/her oral hygiene then there are also chances of failure of a dental implant.
b) Not visiting your Dentist for regular follow-ups:
Visiting your dentist regularly will tell you the problem at an early stage. If you ignore visiting your dentist once a year then the problem will reach the stage where dental implants can fail.
c) Ignoring other teeth and not maintaining them:
Not taking care of other teeth present in the oral cavity and maintaining them may lead to dental implant failure because you will unknowingly start using those teeth which function well and high forces will damage the implant.
d) Periodontitis also known as peri-implantitis:
Peri- implantitis is the infection caused by bacteria and food lodgement that accumulate around the gums where implants are placed. Peri-implantitis is one of the major reasons why dental implants fail. It means bone around the implant has started to resorb which may lead to implant failure.
Although, the chances of a dental implant are very less but ignoring your oral hygiene and regular follow-ups may lead to the failure of a dental implant. However, you need not worry as the chances of dental implant failure are very less after the placement.
